Why are boys so different? Why would a trip to the garbage dump be such a highlight in a boy's life? What do boys need to learn in order to become good men? A mother's influence on her sons is unique and valuable, but still sometimes moms don't understand what makes their boys tick. They want to help their sons grow up to become men of honor and integrity, but that's a tremendous challenge.
With refreshing honesty and a man's insight, author Rick Johnson offers the advice, understanding, and support every mom is looking for when it comes to raising godly sons. Using extensive research and humorous personal experiences, he addresses tough issues, such as communication, discipline, sexuality, and respect. Mothers, including single moms as well as grandmothers and teachers, will find wise counsel and reassurance in this practical and helpful book.

I was hesitant that this book would place too much emphasis on religion...but I think it makes a valid point about the role of religion in a child's life (no matter what that religion is even if it is just a spirituality). Right after this book, I read a book on the same topic but written by a pediatrician with two sons. I did not think her book was as insightful as Johnson's (and she also agreed with the role of religion). Johnson has a very engaging narrative style that makes his points at the same time holding your attention. He also entertains you with relevant stories to demonstrate his points making the book and enjoyable and quick read. Mom's will definitely walk away having learned a thing or two about how boys - and men - think. And while there are certain male specific pieces of advice that have to do with how boys think and what motivates them....I should point out that much of the advice he gives would also be applicable raising daughters with character (holding your kids accountable, providing good role models, for instance).Product details

That My Son (Audible Audio Edition) Rick Johnson Treasure Publishing Books Reviews
Very true, it is so important as moms that we know how to influence them, because one day they will get married and we as moms should teach our boys how to treat women and their future wives! Love this book!
Being an only child with a father who was raised with a strong mother and 3 sisters, I was not ready for the differences in raising a son. This is straight forward and real life information. No scientific studies or wordiness. The real deal. Some things I never thought of facing or being an issue. Helped me "love" (v) my son again and lessen the frustration which dominated my mind.
I was having a lot of trouble with my relationship with my 9 yr. old son, so I bought this book (as well as The Mommy Manual by Barbara Curtis), and although I've only just read the first chapter, I've already learned a few things about boys (and men) that I didn't understand before, and I can look at my son with a little more understanding now. I recommend this book to all moms who have sons (or a husband for that matter!) )
Great book if you are a single mom raising boys! Or even if you are not a single parent and raising boys!! Unlike some of the other reviews, I wish there was MORE scripture and biblical undertones included in the book! Great practical advice! Highly recommend.
I thought this book would be appropriate for me as the mother of two boys but I soon discovered it is aimed specifically towards single mothers. If you're a single mother, this book would be great for you. However, if you don't relate to that specific circumstance, I would choose another book.
This is a wonderful and powerful book. It kept me wanting to read more and so empowered this mom of 3 boys!
I love that this book was written by a man. It gave me a lot of insight into my HUSBAND as well as my boys (I have three--and no girls, so there's a lot of testosterone around here!) Mr. Johnson does a great job of writing TO females ABOUT males. He uses specific examples of behaviors that frustrate most wives/moms, and then he explains them. You don't get the feeling that he is offering up excuses for boys. He explains, and then gives suggestions on how to use it to your advantage.
One example He talks about how women want to have serious talks with eye contact, etc. That makes boys nervous and they shut down. He suggested talking to them while they are a little occupied. I started hanging out in the driveway with my 10 year old, rebounding his basketball shots, and I was amazed at the things he'd open up about. At first I just listened to whatever was on his mind at the moment, but quickly I would bring up things I wanted to talk about, and he'd respond!
There are a lot of things like that in the book. It is definitely worth buying--I've read it several times and made tons of notes to myself...I go back for a "refresher" once in a while.
I was hesitant that this book would place too much emphasis on religion...but I think it makes a valid point about the role of religion in a child's life (no matter what that religion is even if it is just a spirituality).
