The Council is the governing Coven over the Land of Five, a region entirely inhabited—and split apart—by witches with varying powers.

Lilith Lace, a witch thought to be born powerless, happily resides in Ignis, the Coven of Fire, until she suddenly develops telekinesis, an ability only seen in some witches born in Mentis, the Coven of the Mind. She's terrified of it, unsure who she can trust. Her best friends, Helena and Clio, are hot and cold about what she can do, leaving Lilith even more unsure about her future.

At her Arcane Ceremony, the truth comes out.

When the Council learns what she can do, she’s taken under their wing and is finally told the truth—everything she’s learned about the Land of Five, herself included, have been nothing but lies.

The Council is a solid young adult novel that is as much mystery as it is fantasy. The main protagonist, Lilith, though disabled through an "accident" as a child, has been made stronger by her difficulties. She has a quick and inquisitive mind and a fire in her spirit. Though seemingly born to parents who are "UnEquipped" (non magical) in the land of Ignis where fire powers blossom, she develops magical abilities more common to the inhabitants of Mentis. As she tries to understand why this anomaly has occurred, she begins to uncover a series of lies that lead her to question everything around her. Who can she trust?

I liked many aspects of this book. I enjoyed Lilith's travels through the Land of Five and the mystery surrounding her past. The descriptions of each area covered all five senses, though I found it hard to believe that they were able to walk everywhere so quickly. Frankly, I would have assumed alternate forms of transportation would be available. The author pays nice detail to Lilith's life before and after her Arcane Ceremony, introducing us to the people that matter to Lilith and giving us a taste of her varying relationships.

However, there are aspects of the Council that confuse me. Five or six powerful, yet not fully developed, mages are running the Land of Five? How are they putting down skirmishes between groups of well trained witches who may have better control of their powers? And somehow, they're providing food and water deliveries to areas that don't have it? Where is this food and water coming from? And who is actually profiting from this? There are a lot of questions about how this world actually works that don't seem adequately answered, at least not in this first book of the series.

Aside from an occasional grammar mistake which should have been caught by her editor, my biggest problem with the book is the cliffhanger ending (a pet peeve of mine that seems to plague many series these days). Just as we start to get answers to some of the mysteries plaguing Lilith, everything explodes and then it suddenly ends. I understand that the book is already 400+ pages long, and I like that the author took the time to properly immerse us in the world, but maybe BECAUSE of that, the ending just seems very abrupt. Though I prefer series novels that can each stand on their own, I am interested to see the future answers Ms. Krantz has in store for both the reader and Lilith.

The Council The Witch Ambitions Trilogy Book 1 eBook Kayla Krantz Reviews

This is a story of Lilith. A common enough girl who lives with uncommon people. She's a witch with no powers, an Unequipped. At her 'graduation' ceremony, they test her ability and it shows she has an affinity for all magic. She is instantly claimed by the Council. A group of 5 Council members and the Sage. They want her to represent her people and help the fight against the Elemental. A group of rogue witched trying to start a war.
I really enjoyed this story. Poor Li, she's been unequipped her whole life and the changes and lies she's had to endure. I love a strong girl and even though Li gets sulky from time to time, she's growing and becoming a force.
I generally groan and/or roll my eyes at the thought of another story involving witches and magic, but this one surprised me. Krantz's characters are developed and rich in texture; the tale has uniqueness that generates intrigue and suspense. This is not yet another "Divergent" rehash (although I wasn't a fan to begin with, it seems to be a molded template of sorts). So why am I docking a star? Pacing; it was incredibly slow. What works as a slow burn in the first half of the book that entices the reader, had me itching for a climax by the second half. The protagonist, Lilith, is a likable heroine, but the reader is frequently reminded of her questioning doubts. This leads to redundant narrative and dialogue that, in my opinion, could have been chopped. But again, that is a personal preference. Otherwise, the writing is strong and solid; I will likely dabble in book two of the series in the future and I would definitely recommend this to fans of the genre.
This was a great read (though there were a few things that irked me). I loved the author's ability to draw you right into the story, and I enjoyed the main character's plight. Lilith, the main character, is disabled but strong-willed. She's also very quick to anger. She trusts very few people, and she has reason to be cautious - everyone has lied to her about who she is. Other characters, like Clio and Crowe, are well-defined and helped to make this book a fun read. And then there are other characters who stay a mystery, which is fine, but one character does a complete flip-flop toward the end, which doesn't mesh well with the rest of that character's actions.

The plot starts off really strong. Lilith and her friends are being sorted into classes - Equipped and Unequipped - based on their magical abilities. Lilith should technically have no powers, but the ceremony reveals otherwise, and then all hell breaks loose. The author does a great job of allowing the reader to feel the intensity of the action scenes. Unfortunately, between the action scenes, it's a bit slow and then too quick in the fast-forward department. Without giving away too much, when Lilith has to visit the different covens, it feels somewhat slow. I feel like there could have been either more of a connection made between her and the covens or more actions could have been introduced. Also, one minute Lilith is a trainee, and the next she's in charge - there were very few training sessions or opportunities for growth. I think that could have been flushed out better. I get that the author was most likely trying to make sure the book didn't get too long, but that part felt very rushed.

The book ends in a cliff-hanger, which I love! I enjoy being left on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next book. Unfortunately, I felt that this cliff-hanger came too quickly, had too many consequences, and felt unrealistic. I don't like spoilers, so I'll try to make sense without giving anything away. One minute, Lilith is given a whole bunch of information to process, and the next minute, she's thrown into the lion's den, even though she was just a trainee. Certain people were killed in the battle, which made his/her whole character seem pointless. And it makes absolutely no sense to me that all of the covens are being protected by witches who don't have full control of their powers!

Still, even with those flaws, I REALLY enjoyed the story, which is why I still gave it four stars. It kept my interest, even through the somewhat slow parts. And I'm really tempted to read book two, once it's published. I just hope the author strengthens some areas of the story. -)
